School is done. The run is on.

Well I have slacked off in my running over the past few weeks, subsequently slacking off on my writing in turn. It is strange how those things intermix: I run, I want to write about it, and when I don’t run somehow the urge to write also fades. But hopefully I have a one-time excuse: I finished grad school!

And it wasn’t just wrapping up a couple classes or an exam or two. No, that would be too easy! The program I am in, a masters program in Systems Engineering, had a ‘capstone week’. That is, we all went for a week, Monday through Friday, and got into teams of 8 for a project. We had no class, but deadlines and deliverables due every day. We spent all of our time with our groups, and saw others in the program very little. With days starting at 8 and ending at around 4AM, finding time for a run was a little tough. But I did get in two quick runs with friends in the program on Monday and Tuesday.

The Tuesday run was most interesting: consisting of two ego-ridden runners and another casual jogger! You’ve heard of interval training, right? Well if you’re in a group, here’s a kicker that will be hilarious and fun, while also kicking towards the teeth a bit! It’s simple: at every incline, step on it! And don’t just sprint, go all-out until the top of the hill/incline until your partner or others give up. Or maybe you’ll have to concede that hill.  You’ll collectively have to take a breather at that point almost by design, at which point you can jog slow for others to catch up [and you to regain your own breath!].

I’ve historically been wary of going all out considering the obvious increased risk of injury. Add onto that my dedication to barefoot running and the ensuing training runs that result are kind of boring: slow, or medium steady plodding along.

But the the sprints, or intervals, or uphill insanity, however you wish to refer it, were fun! I think a pretty basic base of a few miles every couple of days prepares your legs for such rigor, at least in small doses. The next day my quads were a little taut, but overall I felt ready to go out for an easy run. It really surprised me to have not worn out my feet during the sprinting! Whatever way you look at it, you’re putting your body, and your feet, through greater stress when doing high intensity workouts like that. And you  might argue that that’s the reason to wear shoes! But to counter, consider the alternative: all that extra force being skipped by your feet and transferred up to your knees and beyond! I consider it a recipe for runner’s knee, tendonitis, and a whole host of other calamities to the joint. More on this later, but you get the idea.

Following that aside, let me lay out a couple of upcoming posts and sections that I’m preparing, meant to aid the budding barefoot runner, the inquisitive, or the seasoned runner looking for some tips!

  1. A beginner’s section, outlining the first steps and considerations one should keep in mind when starting off.
  2. An injuries section, describing common injuries, my injuries, how to deal, and how to avoid
  3. A form section. Let’s talk about running form, barefoot and otherwise.
  4. My plan. A general outline of my running goals, along with a weekly plan of what I hope to accomplish.
  5. Races. There are a ton of races out there, and I plan to post some that I find particularly interesting, whether or not I’m partaking in the fun!
  6. Shorter, quicker posts focused on particular aspects and considerations for running that I or you find pertinent and ask about!
  7. Maybe a Q&A section?
So I’ll need to consolidate a bit, for sure. But that’s the start of the mission! School done, the run is on!

Hello World!

Hello world! There, it is officially the beginning of my journey into writing about running! I’ve started a few blogs before in my time. But they were of little purpose and more of a technical exploration into the world of blogging. I seldom stuck with them. And I had excuses to not continue them. This time, I think it’s going to stick! Let me explain…

This time, I’m following a passion. This time, I’m entering territory that I honestly believe will be fruitful, both to me and to you, the casual reader and, dare I say it, the real world! You see, I’ve spent the last few years going from recreational gym-runner to an injured runner to a non-runner and now, finally, back to a runner. I’ve experienced joys, setbacks, frustrations, and anger at both myself and the distractions that keep me from being free, being fit, and soon to be explained, being barefoot :) .

So there you have it: this is going to be a blog about me, my experiences, my stories, my wisdom, my lack of wisdom, and so on. I mean to focus mostly on the world of running, then towards my URL implying nature of focus on nature, or natural, or barefoot, running(is everyone awake now after trying to read that sentence?). I hope to jump from this primary genre of the blog, running or fitness or barefoot lifestyle and the like, to other outlets of insight or question that I have regarding the rest of life in general, and it’s all somehow interrelated. And most of all, I want you to get involved, to gain as much as you can from this site, and to give something back to the community I hope you will become a part of!

As I write, I get excited and want to write more. I have always enjoyed writing, but not had much need to focus on it outside of my schooling. And I write code now, building things and sitting in an unergonomic chair most of the day. So I’m technically writing, pretty technically in fact, but not the creative prose or streams that might find there way into this blog or any other. I won’t say which type of writing I get more enjoyment from, but I will say it’s not the one that’s paying the bills!

To try and wrap this up before it becomes three first blog posts, I will propose my plans for the blog going forward. Primarily, I will start with a few posts about my journey into the sport of running. Then, I’ll transition towards the crazy world of barefoot running: what it is, what it means, how to start, why to start, the works. I wrote a guest blog for Vanessa over at VanessaRuns, and I’ll eventually repost it here. Following this, I hope to delve into my individual training, goals, stats, documentary type stuff to keep my training straight and my blogs directed and honest. But more importantly, I expect topics I bring up to lead to an array of other thoughts, ideas for posts, a fuller experience to add to a beginning or seasoned runner or curious visitor.

I’ll post a list of topics I plan to get to and begin staking my claim in this world of blogging and  research and experimentation, instruction, and inspiration. Join me on the journey, as I want the feedback as much to help me as I want it to help other readers! I’m slightly politically liberal, but in the world of running and fitness I am unbiased, not sponsored by any sports drinks or boot camps. I will probably defend the principles and benefits of barefoot running like it’s my firstborn, however I legitimately hope to learn as much as I hope to dish out in this whole ordeal. So welcome, I hope you enjoy the site and all that you eventually find from and add to it!
